Country: Algeria
IWRM plan: An IWRM Plan does not exist however the elements of IWRM are contained within laws, policies and plans such as national plan for water (2005) and water law (2005). The obligation to elaborate on an Action Plan has been clearly stated in national legal framework. The IWRM implementation framework is currently under preparation and the key institution (actor) driving the IWRM process is the Ministry of Water Resources. Important issues such as stakeholder participation, gender mainstreaming, private sector involvement and river basin management approach are in place since 1996. The agencies responsible in water management are national Agency of Hydraulic Resources, National Agency of Dams and Large Transmission Mains, Algeria Water Company, National Office for Sewage and National Office for Irrigation and Drainage.

Country: Benin
IWRM plan: The IWRM plan development process started in 2005 with support from various donors (PAWD program, GWP spupport). A comprehensive situation analysis helped to identify the context for IWRM and link it to national development priorities. It is pending an approval.

Country: Burkina Faso
IWRM plan: IWRM Action Plan was adopted in February 2001. It was validated by the decision makers, the actors and the users as a whole and is a starting point for water resources management. It defines tracks to solve water resources management problems. Support of GWP under PAWD program involved a facilitation and capacity building.

Country: Cameroon
IWRM plan The IWRM plan is developed, pending approval. The planning process (facilitated by GWP Cameroon) was well consulted with the development of Poverty Reduction Strategy. IWRM approach is now considered in the national strategy for water and land and there is provision for the national IWRM programme in the budget of the ministry responsible for water. These are the first steps ahead from fragmented and sectorially oriented water management.

Country: Cape Verde
IWRM plan: A draft IWRM plan was prepared. The plan is expected to be adopted and launched in 2010 and the legal framework for the administration of water resources was developed. Strategies for financing water resources were developed.

Country: Egypt
IWRM plan: In the Egyptian context, the National Water Resources Plan corresponds to an IWRM Plan although there is IWRM implementation framework in place. Most of the IWRM principles are in different documents such as the National Water Resources Plan 2017 (2005), National Master Plan for Water and Wastewater (2009) and Rural Sanitation Strategy (2009). A series of water related legislations inform of laws and decrees and a new water law expected by the end of 2010 exist. There is a long-term programme (30-year) National Plan (1997-2017) accompanied by a series of 5-year plans which details private sector involvement and assessment of private sector participation. The Ministry of Agriculture & Land Reclamation, Ministry of state for Environmental Affairs among others are responsible for over seeing and managing water resources. In addition, financing strategy for water and wastewater in Greater Cairo (2006-2009) has been completed within the MED EUWI Egypt Policy Dialogue

Country: Eriteria
IWRM plan: An IWRM plan was adopted in 2009. The 2009-2016 action plan is categorized into a one year short term (2009), medium term (2009-2011) and a long term (2009-2016).  The total cost of implementing all the project portfolios is under the plan is about US$ 19.8 million.

Country: Ethiopia
IWRM plan: Berki Basin IWRM Plan was developed and adopted. In addition, concrete legal, institutional, financial and technical measures were defined for ensuring water security.

Country: Kenya
IWRM plan: GWP Kenya together with the Water Resource Management Authority provided substantial technical inputs in the development of the IWRM plan. Over the 5 years of work, the National Water Resources Management Strategy which was gazetted in 2007 fully recognizes the IWRM as a national priority . The IWRM Plan has been prepared taking into consideration Kenya’s aspiration to be a middle income country by the year 2030. The plan is to be implemented in the regions through the already developed Catchment Management Strategies for different river basins.

Country: Malawi
IWRM plan: IWRM/WE Plan for period of 2008 - 2012 was endorsed by Government in ?. The Plan is also in support of the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy. The Government is committed to implementing the IWRM/WE Plan through all key sectors and institutions both public and private and involving water users at all levels. Support of GWP in facilitating the process was essential.

Country: Mali
IWRM plan: IWRM plan developement was supported by GWP, adopted by the Government in April 2008. A round table for the financing of the Action Plan held in February 2009 (nearly 19 mil$ already pledged by IFIs and donors)

Country: Marocco
IWRM plan: There is no IWRM Plan but the National Water Plan and the Master Plans for River Basins follow the IWRM principles and framework. The National Master Plan was elaborated through a national consultation process structured around thematic priorities. A Water Law (1995) also exists providing for stakeholder participation; the establishment of river basin agencies; the elaboration of national and river basin master plans; mechanism for cost recovery and polluter-pays and user-pays principles. Important ministries and agencies responsible in water resources management include Ministry of Energy, Water and Environment, River Basin Agencies, High Council on Water and Climate and Inter-Ministerial Water Commission.

IWRM plan: Water sector reform and a national water resource management strategy were a starting point for IWRM planning process.  Water financing strategy developed.

Country: Senegal
IWRM plan: IWRM plan adopted for period from 2008 - 2015. Planning process involved regional dialogues facilitated by GWP.

Country: Swaziland
IWRM plan: A draft IWRM plan was developed, pending approval. Coupled with the draft of the IWRM plan, there is also a water master plan and the process of formulating the plan was broadened from a narrow focus on water resource management to a broader cross-sectoral focus with linkages to national development priorities.

Country: Tunisia
IWRM plan: Since 1970 Tunisia has adopted an integrated planning approach to water resource management. By law water resources are public property apart from some traditional rights that have become user rights. The Water Code/Law (1975) introduced the concept of water economy and water environment protection. There are three (3) Master Plans for water use according to country geographical areas: i) for the North and extreme North, ii) for the Centre, iii) for the South.. Water management issues fall under the following ministries ministry of Agriculture, Hydraulic Resources and Fisheries that includes: Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.

Country: Zambia
IWRM plan: The IWRM/WE Plan (2007-2010) is endorsed and intends to support the implementation of the water related programs in the current and future National Development Plans.
