UN-Water

UN-Water is an inter-agency mechanism formally established in 2003 by the United Nations High Level Committee on Programmes. UN-Water is composed of representatives of 28 UN organizations. UN-Water strengthens the coordination and coherence among UN entities dealing with issues related to all aspects of freshwater and sanitation. This includes surface and groundwater resources, the interface between freshwater and seawater and water-related disasters.

Global Water Partnership is a partner to UN-Water. In 2007, UN-Water and GWP organized the International Conference on Managing Water Resources Towards 2015. The conference resulted in development of the statement Roadmapping for Advancing IWRM Processes. This statement has been prepared to support countries in their efforts to improve water management through an IWRM approach, and to stimulate the development of a robust framework for monitoring, evaluating and reporting on the outcomes of such an approach. It is a follow up of the UN-Water Report on Progress on IWRM and Water Efficiency Plans (2008).

At the request of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development a global survey has been carried out and supported by GWP. It aims to determine progress towards sustainable management of water resources using integrated approaches. The Status Report on the application of IWRM Management  was launched in Rio+20 Conference (jun 2012).  The report (21MB) is available here.

The UN World Water Development Report

The UN WWD report, released every three years in conjunction with the World Water Forum is the UN’s flagship report on water. It is a comprehensive review that gives an overall picture of the state of the world's freshwater resources and aims to provide decision-makers with the tools to implement sustainable use of our water resources. Through a series of assessments, the Reports provide a mechanism for monitoring changes in water resource and its management and tracking progress towards achieving targets, particularly those of the Millennium Development Goals and the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Water for Life Decade, 2005-2015
In December 2003, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the period 2005-2015, the International Decade for Action Water for Life. The Decade was officially launched in 2005 and the primary goal is to promote efforts to fulfill international commitments made on water and water-related issues by 2015. The focus is on furthering cooperation at all levels, so that the water-related goals of the Millennium Declaration and Agenda 21 can be achieved especially in the areas of quantity and quality. These include measures to improve access to clean water and sanitation. The United Nations, through its inter-agency coordination mechanism, UN-Water, is responsible for coordinating the 'Water for Life' Decade.
