EventsThis year, 2024, World Water Day aims to highlight the benefits of water management as a conduit for peace, showcasing effective mechanisms and tools to enhance cooperation and prevent water-related disputes. Under the theme “Water for Peace”, this campaign, led jointly by UNESCO and UNECE on behalf of UN-Water, showcases water's pivotal role in fostering peace, prosperity, and conflict prevention. Sustainable water management generates a plethora of benefits to individuals and communities, including health, food and energy security, protection from natural disasters, education, improved living standards and employment, economic development, and a variety of ecosystem services. It is through these benefits that water leads to prosperity.
UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa in collaboration with its partners- Buzi-Pungwe-Save Watercourse Commission (BUPUSA COM); CUVELAI Watercourse Commission; Limpopo Watercourse Commission (LIMCOM); Orange-Senqu Watercourse Commission (ORASECOM), SADC-Groundwater Management Institute (SADC-GMI) and Zambezi Watercourse Commission (ZAMCOM) will join the rest of the world in commemorating this year’s World Water Day. This commemoration will be held online and will include the presentation of the United Nations World Water Development Report 2024, presentations from heads/representatives of Watercourse Commissions/River Basin Organisations, high-level officials, alongside technical presentations that draw on field experiences.
