The SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework aims to deliver fast results at an increased scale with “optimized financing [being] essential to get resources behind country plans”. However, in 2020 USD 8.7 billion of official development assistance is reported for water and sanitation when achieving only SDG 6.1.1 on drinking water would require at least USD 1.7 trillion additional investment. Our current financial model is therefore highly insufficient for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda (2022 World Water Development Report).
In this context, this session will aim to attract attention to the accelerator of the SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework dedicated to finance, and in particular groundwater finance. Despite groundwater systems are the predominant reservoir on Earth and is becoming an even more strategic reserve of freshwater with climate change, specific data on groundwater financing is not readily available with current financing usually targeting conjunctive use of surface and groundwater resources. The session will present the existing groundwater investments and reflect on its sources, targets and beneficiaries as well as discuss the funding challenges, priority areas and opportunities. Recommendations and priority actions will be formulated to be included in the Summit Statement.
